Beyond Flowers: A Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Sometimes you have a big beer week thingamajig and basically blow off your own mother’s birthday to run a beer festival, but because she’s incredibly understanding and such a sweetheart even though she had a big party and everyone asked about you and you didn’t even send her a card — but you did call her and she was already having a drink, so it was a good birthday anyway. Meanwhile, you haven’t delivered her birthday GIFT because you’re still pretty terrible, and now it’s already Mother’s Day.

Oh wait, that was just me.

I’m sure you treat your lovely mother much better. In my case, I’m buttering her up. We typically do a Ashcombe/Bloody Marys at T.J. Rockwell’s thing, but I also want to take her to Cassel Vineyards because of wine and my mother confessed on Thanksgiving that her favorite memories of her whole life were when she owned horses as a teenager. I got her Train tickets, too, but this is a twofer, and you see how bad I was.

Regardless, here are some off-the-beaten bouquet/brunch gift ideas for Mother’s Day — which, gentlemen (yes), is this Sunday.

Loves live musicTickets to see Train in Hershey

My mom saw The Doors five times and named me after Bob Dylan’s first wife. She knows music. And she says that Train is the best live concert. So yes, she’s going when they return to Hershey on June 11.

Weather should be nicer this weekend.

All moms love wine, right? I mean, sweet or dry, local wineries have something for everyone. Plus, you can check out Cassel’s new deck and watch the horses in the field. Of course we have plenty of other local wineries with lovely amenities, depending on your location and preferences. Take mom out on the Hershey Harrisburg Wine Country trail!

Loves beerFlight Kit at Grain + Verse

My mom is not into craft beer, but my friend Colleen — who is a mom to three — sure is! Her kids have a long way to go ’til they can make this purchase themselves, so hopefully dad will help them out. The Craft Beer Flight Kits from The Case for Beer is a #HBGBeerWeek special and there are a few left at Grain + Verse. It features 12 expertly curated local and regional beers in one special box. It’s like an advent calendar for beer!

Mama does like some heat — within reason, but Torchbearer Sauces have more than just hot stuff. Their Oh My Garlic is their top seller — and for good reason. That stuff is great slathered on everything (or paired with the hot stuff for a hot garlic sauce). Pack this into a gift basket with a bottle of wine, a cute apron and some gourmet chocolates if she enjoys cooking.

Likes to do it different: Zeroday Brewing Company Brunch

Marketers would have you believe that moms only want one thing in life besides flowers and that is a meal that is both breakfast and lunch. Look, brunch RULES. We all know it. Eggs and Bloody Marys are best together. But let’s move past the boring same old same old and do something different. First of all, use THESE brunch recommendations to start. OR, you could take Mom to the newest spot in town: Zeroday Brewing Company in Midtown Harrisburg for ZerØsas and treats — including creamy rich Lobster Mac & Cheese from J.B. Kelly Seafood Connection. Open noon to 8 p.m. Check Facebook for details. After, you can even take her to Midtown Cinema for a matinee, or perhaps a special screening of Psycho, part of the Classic Film Series.
