6 Beers to Stock Your Memorial Day Cooler

It’s the unofficial kick-off to summer! I hope you all get some time to relax and enjoy yourselves with friends and grill all of the meats because it’s Memorial Day weekend and that’s just what you do.

Before the weekend gets here, whether you’re grilling at home, going to a party, or exploring the outdoors – you’re gonna need beer! Here are a few ideas on just what beers you’ll want to grab.

Bell’s Oatsmobile American Pale Ale

I’ve been looking for a great easy drinking lower-ABV hopped-up brew that has a flavor that I don’t get sick of after having more than one. Finally, Oatsmobile appears. It’s brewed with oats (in case the name didn’t make that clear) which gives it a softer mouthfeel and a creamier body than the typical IPA or Pale Ale. The hop profile includes Mosaic, Ekuanot, and Glacier creating a strong aroma of fruit without any fruit added. Most 4.3% brews feel “thin,” but thanks to those oats it will definitely fool you into thinking it’s a bigger beer than it is. Perfect for day drinking and kayaking.

Lancaster Brewing Co. Blue Trail Blueberry Lemon Shandy

It wouldn’t be summer without fruit beer! This local favorite of mine is perfect for lounging poolside! Blue Trail is a shandy (beer + soda) that uses real lemons and blueberries and pure cane sugar. It’s like drinking refreshing blueberry lemonade on a hot day. Now in cans, too! Just grab one and plant yourself in a chair and get to work on these. I’ll be sipping these all day while camping this weekend.

Sierra Nevada Otra Vez

Part 2: Cans of Summer (Beach Edition)

Speaking of refreshing beers, I’m pretty sure Otra Vez is also exactly what you need this weekend, especially those of us who straight up adore goses. Otra Vez is a sweet yet tangy beer with prickly pear cactus and grapefruit juices as well as a bit of saltiness. The tartness isn’t aggressive, but it’s there just to remind you that it’s a gose. While I really don’t like grapefruit at all, this beer does a great job of balancing the weirdness of grapefruit so that you barely notice it. This hot weather brew is only 4.5% ABV and is great with fresh grilled seafood.

Victory Prima Pils

The summer is made for light, easy drinking pilsners. It takes talent to create a respectable and well-brewed pilsner; lagers are difficult to make from the start, and you really have to nail the hop profile to get the correct result. A great pilsner should be light in color and body, have spicy and slightly bitter hop flavors, and an unmemorable malt flavor that just hides in the background of the beer. You know who has that? Prima Pils. Victory makes excellent German-style brews, and this is no exception. These go perfectly with your burgers and dogs on the grill.

Left Hand Travelin Light Kolsch

I’m very particular about Kolsches and don’t prefer an “interpretation of a kolsch” but rather the crisp, clean, light perfection of one on a hot day. While it’s going to be warm this weekend, not hot, Left Hand Travelin Light is still a lovely throwback beer for all day drinking. You won’t get sick of the flavor since it’s so light — in fact, expect a crisp finish paired with a slightly biscuity, slightly citra beer.
