Micah’s Christmas Songs That Don’t Suck
I’ve found myself becoming more and more festive every year when it comes to the holidays. I put lights up in my loft, have Christmas smelling scented candles, and even have a festive gingerbread house made from cardboard for my cat, Allan. Still no tree for me this year — maybe next year I will put one up. So far, this is about as much as you’re going to get out of me.
I’m no Grinch though, don’t get me wrong. I love this time of year. Believe it or not, this hip-hop loving, heavy metal-listening guy loves Christmas music. I know, a surprise to some. There really is no valid argument even I could make against it and have taken the time to “block out” some of the terrible Christmas songs that are like nails on a chalkboard to me there are really some great Christmas songs out there that don’t suck!
My go-to album of all time? Easy. A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi Trio. The entire album outside of the Christmas music genre still stands as an absolute masterpiece for me. This is Christmas to me. Kicking back and enjoying a nice gin and tonic with this album playing.
My favorite Christmas song however, is Christmas in Hollis by Run-D.M.C.
I still remember the video playing on MTV when I was a kid and dancing all around the living room. Leave it to the hip-hop legends that first bridged the rap-rock gap to bring together hip-hop and Christmas (with all due respect to Kurtis Blow). For those of you that maybe too young to remember the video, here it is — the elf used to creep me out.
“Christmas in Hollis” first appeared on A Very Special Christmas.

To help you out with the Christmas jams this year, I put together a Spotify playlist you can put on and get down with so you don’t have to hear the same boring office party playlist that Janice put together over a decade ago. No offense, Janice, but Dominic the Donkey just doesn’t hold up to Sia’s new Christmas album, Everyday is Christmas.
