With just a few days since I’ve been off-the-grid in rural Virginia, I’m heading back on the road this weekend to Indiana (the state) to see one of my best friends — and I cannot wait! Looking forward to wine by the fire pit, Saturday on a boat and overall catching up.

It’s Memorial Day weekend — so two quick important reminders:

Artsfest in downtown Harrisburg will wreck your travel into the city. Be prepared, and for goodness sake, look out for pedestrians.

Don’t drink and drive; don’t text and drive. There will be approximately everyone on the road. Be patient and keep your head straight. Cell phone companies are asking you to pledge not to text and drive ever. Be smart — nothing is that urgent. Pull over before texting/emailing and use hashtag #itcanwait to show your support.

Hersheypark Happy!

Now, back to the fun stuff! Hersheypark (Friday) and The Boardwalk (Saturday) open for the season, full-time this weekend! I checked out some of the newer slides and water fun earlier this week. Our favorite? The Whirlwind, a two-person waterslide that shoots you into a giant “whirlwind flume.”

As always, your best bet is to buy tickets at Giant, where you get a $15 discount plus free parking.

I realize many people like to use their vacations and weekend getaways as a chance to completely relax and unwind, and I totally get that.

However, I am someone who needs to sweat a little, and I honestly enjoy getting a good workout in before I begin my day whether I am headed to the office or the beach. I typically cut back on exercise when I’m away, but one of my favorite things to do when in a new place is to explore by foot.

Here are some tips if you’re looking to get moving when you’re traveling.

First – and most importantly – pack your workout clothes. If you waste suitcase space on sneakers and workout gear, chances are you’ll be more inclined to use them.

Check out the National Park Service or DCNR websites. Is there a local park you can run in? Or maybe go for an early morning hike? This past weekend, I was in Media for the Brandywine Valley Craft Brewers Fest, and I spent Saturday morning tackling some major hills at Ridley Creek State Park. The park has a 4.3 mile paved loop, which was perfect for running, walking or biking. I never would have gone there had I not been searching for a running route, and it’s a beautiful state park, so I am glad I was able to experience it.

If you’re not into running, and just want to work up a brief sweat, The New York Times just posted a seven-minute workout you can do with only your bodyweight, a wall and a chair. The Traveling WOD offers CrossFit-type workouts that you can do without equipment.

Does where you are staying have a fitness center? An early morning elliptical or weight session can put you on the right track for the day.

Race challenge! This may not be for everyone, but I love running races in new places. Last December, Sara and I road tripped to Virginia Beach for a race, and I’ve now twice pinned a NYRR bib to my shirt while running through Central Park.

Try to see if you can get your travel companions to join you. Last summer, my mom and I did some beach running while we were in Long Beach Island, NJ. Having someone to talk to makes the time fly by, and it’s also nice to get some one-on-one time.

How about a less formal workout? Play volleyball on the beach, go for a swim, walk places instead of driving, rent a kayak, rent a surrey, play tennis … the opportunities are endless. See what’s popular in the area.

While exercising is definitely important, one thing to remember is that a half hour on an elliptical is easily canceled out by overindulging. Don’t fall into, “I’m on vacation!” mode. Let indulgences happen, but make them worth it. I once read somewhere “Yes, brownies are good, but I already know what they taste like.” I love this! Sure, that ice cream or french fries will taste delicious, but you already know what they taste like. If they are worth the splurge, than absolutely do it.

Overall, the most important thing to remember is that you’re on vacation, so enjoy it!

Do you work out on vacation? How do you stay motivated?

Well, folks, this is one of those rare occasions where procrastination can be an advantage.

In just a couple weeks, we’ll host the second annual SaraBozich.com Booze Cruise aboard The Pride of the Susquehanna. We had a great party last year, so we knew we had to do it again.

The Booze Cruise kicks off at 5 p.m. on June 5 with a pre-party on the Overlook Deck on City Island featuring free beer and booze samples, light food from Arooga’s, music and a bunch of free stuff.

We’ll board the boat a little after 6 p.m. and cruise the river for two hours, entertained with island-inspired music from DJ Geoffro. This year, we’ll have two bars on-board – the full service bar inside the cabin and a beer-only bar on the top deck for your convenience.

The after party will be held at Arooga’s Downtown, where it’s wing night — but check your swag bag for special cruise-only coupons!

This weekend we’re writing from the lovely Commonwealth of Virginia, where we’ve traveled for few days of rest and relaxation. In addition to the normal R&R routine, which will consist of fishing for Nate and lots of reading for me, we will also take some time to visit a handful of the state’s five distilleries, 40 breweries and 200 wineries.

Virginia has a rich history of viticulture; Thomas Jefferson had two vineyards at his Monticello home and today the state boasts a surprising number of great wineries. We probably won’t make it to a few of my favorites (Boxwood, Chrysalis and Linden), but we will make it over to see the incredibly friendly folks at Desert Rose and the wonderful Rappahannock Cellars.

I likely will leave most places with a hearty bottle of cab franc or a meritage blend, but I’m also planning to purchase a bottle or two of viognier, a white wine with a golden hue that is so popular that in 2011 the Virginia wine board named it the state’s signature grape.

The resurgence of viognier is interesting, especially considering that the French grape was almost extinct 50years ago. At the time, there were only three acres of viognier in the world. Fortunately, viognier was saved from extinction, and today is grown in several regions, including in Virginia, where it grows particularly well.

Viognier ranges from very dry to slightly sweet, but it almost always smells sweeter than it tastes. The bouquet of a viognier is one of its most distinguishable characteristics; it tends to have very strong floral notes of violets and roses, along with peach, pineapple and orange. Viognier smells like a freshly made tropical fruit salad.

The strong aromatics of a viognier are important indicators of its drinkability. Viognier is meant to be consumed when it’s young and it matures quickly. When a viognier is past its prime, it loses its strong flower and fruit nose. Instead it smells and tastes flat.

When you drink a glass of viognier you won’t just smell tropical fruits and fresh flowers, you’ll taste them too. The wine also has herbs and spices with hints of vanilla and a very light smokiness. Its dominating flavors are apricot, pineapple and peach, but it may also taste of honey, mango and butter.

Those same flavors crop up in brightly floral IPAs. I’ve talked about IPAs before, but I focused on the ones with the strong citrusy grapefruit bite. My hophead friends tend to like those IPAs that bite back, but I prefer the more gentle, aromatic IPAs with hops that enhance the herbal and floral qualities in a beer.

These IPAs have a very perfumey nose – much like viognier. And while they maintain the hop bitterness, they are usually not as harsh or pungent as other IPAs. They can range from bitter to slightly sweet and often have more tropical fruit flavors than their super-bitter relatives. Two great examples of IPAs that have dominating apricot, peach, and honey notes are the Ballast Point Sculpin and Ithaca’s Flower Power.

Since some breweries are taking these tropical fruit elements to a new level, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a few local favorites that have incorporated apricots into the brewing process. Dogfish Head’s Aprihop is a beautifully hoppy beer with light apricot undertones. The seasonal beer is perfect on a warm spring day.

Those guys at Troegs are also getting into the game; they just released their Scratch #94, an apricot IPA that was described by a friend as “a crisper version of Aprihop.”

Of course our good friends at Pizza Boy Brewing are always mixing fruit and beer in the best ways possible. While not IPAs, they currently have Apricots Wheat on draft and Permasmile, an apricot lambic available in bottles.

IPAs and viognier pair nicely with spicy Thai, Chinese, Indian and Mexican dishes, but I’m drinking both this weekend sitting beside a roaring campfire.

Are you on Pinterest? The addictive site attracted record users when it began, but it’s had its downfalls.

In fact, there is an entire blog devoted to the failures of those being a little overly ambitious on Pinterest. But while many people delight in sharing their Pinterest fails, I’ve found that many ideas I’ve lifted from the site have been quite successful from decorating ideas and especially recipes.

I’m here to reassure you that some things are incredibly doable. Here a few great incredibly easy ideas pulled straight from Pinterest that you can try at home.

Recipes

As far as cooking goes, some of the recipes you’ll see on Pinterest claim to have few ingredients and be quite simple when in reality some of the steps are a bit more drawn out than one would expect.

The best thing I’ve stolen from Pinterest so far is a tie between Jalapeño Chicken Burgers and Avocado Chicken Salad. Both are incredibly healthful and use chicken and several natural ingredients. The chicken burgers are incredibly easy to make and great on the grill. I chose to top mine with fresh guacamole and sliced tomatoes. The chicken salad is great as-is in a sandwich or on top of greens.

I’ve also had a lot of success with recipes that emulate ethnic foods such as Indian, Asian and Mexican cuisine. The best I’ve done is a replica Thai-peanut sauce. This sauce is incredibly easy to make but does use quite a few ingredients that you may not have on-hand. Feel free to sub in spaghetti noodles instead of soba if you feel so inclined, and I’ve found in a worst case scenario even Ramen noodles can be used.

Home Projects

The biggest Pinterest fails I’ve seen usually involve people trying to create an extravagant project for their homes that are well beyond their ability. While some of the projects look incredible, it’s important to remember that not everyone has the capability to create something from nothing. It shouldn’t take much for you to examine the step-by-step process and evaluate your own skill level, and I’ve done just that. The best project I’ve done so far has been a very simple and fast square wall hanging addition to my bedroom. All it required was a few pieces of scrapbook paper, cork board and glue.

The result? An awesome and cheap addition. My best advice when dealing with homemade objects and decorations is that if it looks too good to be true it probably is!

Fashion

This is my biggest warning of all! While most fashion projects on Pinterest recommend using old t-shirts and re-purposing older pieces you’ve been neglecting, be very careful as things may not end up as they seem. My favorite piece that I’ve made with the advice of Pinterest is this new perfectly on-trend summer sleeveless shirt. The best part is that this idea and image originated at Buzzfeed, my favorite site. I’m going to go straight up Coachella-style and wear a lace bralette underneath with some cute summer shorts.

What ideas from Pinterest have you had success with?

The scene from last night’s “6yearup” #hbgtweetup. Photo by David Farre.

In fact I’m traveling the next three weekends, two of which are long weekends out of state. Expect a harried Sara next week, let’s just say that.

My timing isn’t exactly on because I hate to miss PA Greek Fest, which runs Friday through Sunday this weekend, and I’m also missing a friend’s surprise baby shower, as well as loads of other great events, which of course you can read about after the jump.

Keep in mind it is also American Craft Beer Week, and you’ll find lots of related events. Drink local for the holiday! I recommend heading to Liquid Hero or Bube’s Brewery for their collab Black IPA. Or go to Pizza Boy (Al’s of Hampden) and try a refreshing Blue Collar Lager or something wilder like the Mayan Hopocalypse. (Just don’t forget a D.D. if you’re drinking the latter.)

I’d also like send a shout-out Happy Anniversary to Level 2 — Can you believe it’s been five years? I can’t wait to see what’s next.

I can’t promise another epic #failwhale cake, nor can I guarantee the weather (though it looks pretty good right now). However, we can all try to get as many of us together for the sixth anniversary of the #hbgtweetup. Please share on Twitter, natch.

Join us at 7 p.m. at the Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Co. We meet every third Wednesday of the month for a casual, social meet-up. If you’re on Twitter or blog (or are otherwise into social media), grab a beer and join the group. Newbies welcome!
